Chapter 359 An unexpected surprise!
Chapter 359 An unexpected surprise!
The tent was crammed with enemy soldiers groaning and cursing, and the smell was foul. At this moment, Zhong Yuemin and a few others huddled in a corner, pretending to treat their wounds, but their ears were perked up.
Each fleeing soldier was covered in mud, bandages, wounds, and blood. The rain couldn't mask the strong stench of blood. Their eyes were dull, terrified, and empty...
Like someone who has lost their soul.
However, this also provided excellent cover for their small team; it was difficult to distinguish between men and women, let alone question them.
A tall, thin, defeated soldier with a dirty bandage wrapped around his arm spat fiercely:
"Damn it, what a pathetic battle this is! Our whole company was wiped out in less than half an hour after we charged in!"
An old soldier with a blood-soaked bandage wrapped around his head sighed nearby:
"The commander is a piece of crap. All he knows is to tell us to hold out. When the artillery fire comes, we don't even have a decent shelter."
"It's all because of those officials up there!"
Another, younger soldier excitedly pounded the ground, aggravating his wound and causing him to grimace in pain.
"They're hiding in the back, what do they know about the horrors on the front lines..."
In the corner, Zhang Haiyang squinted, nudged Qin Guanshan with his elbow, and whispered:
"Old Qin, what are these monkeys saying in their gibberish?"
Qin Guanshan translated in a low voice, and Zhang Haiyang, after listening, sounded somewhat gloating.
"Heh, serves you right. Damn it, why didn't we blow you all up... Yuemin, staying here like this isn't going to work. We need to find out which tent this guy surnamed Mei is in right away, otherwise when the shells start covering us, we won't be able to escape. It would be too frustrating if we didn't die at the hands of the enemy, but were blown up by our own shells."
Zhong Yuemin glanced at the time again; there were only forty minutes left, which was very urgent. He was more anxious than anyone else, and he lowered his voice.
"The outside is full of enemy sentry posts. We can't possibly search every single tent; that would easily expose us. There are already three or four thousand deserters gathered in this area alone. If we're discovered, even if we had three heads and six arms, we wouldn't be able to escape."
Wait a little longer, wait a little longer...
No sooner had he finished speaking than the tall, thin man continued his tirade, growing angrier and his voice rising in pitch:
"Especially that old bastard Mei Ronglan, the army is in such a mess, where the hell is he?"
The veteran quickly pulled him away, lowering his voice:
"Hey, keep your voice down! Are you out of your mind?!"
"I'm not afraid of shit!"
The tall, thin man shook off his hand and roared in a fit of rage.
"We've come this far, what are we afraid of? I heard that while we're waiting to die here, that damn Mei Ronglan is still in his pleasure tent, having fun with female soldiers, in that big, separate tent at the east end of the command post!"
"real or fake?"
The young soldier's eyes widened.
"It's absolutely true. The message came from the Second Battalion: there are two guards standing watch at the gate, as if they're afraid no one will know he's up to no good inside!"
In the corner, Zhong Yuemin and Qin Guanshan quickly exchanged a glance.
Qin Guanshan lowered his voice and said in an almost inaudible whisper:
"East end, a separate tent."
Zhong Yuemin nodded slightly, his eyes sharp.
Zhong Yuemin then looked at Zhang Haiyang and Man Tun and the others, and whispered:
"Go out in five minutes and meet at the designated location. Qin and I will go and catch this guy surnamed Mei. If we haven't arrived in half an hour, you should leave first and don't wait for us."
Zhang Haiyang said:
"Yuemin, I'll go with you two."
"This isn't about having more people, it's about following orders!"
Without waiting for a reply, he tilted his head at Qin Guanshan, indicating that he should come with him.
The two men clutched their stomachs, feigning pain, and staggered to their feet, walking towards the tent exit. Qin Guanshan muttered to himself:
"I need to go to the bathroom..."
He kept yelling, "Ouch, ouch!"
The sentry at the tent entrance glanced at them, saw that they were two disheveled wounded soldiers, and without asking any questions, impatiently waved them back.
As soon as they stepped out of the tent, the cold rain lashed their faces. Zhong Yuemin and Qin Guanshan immediately dropped their pretense, their eyes turning like those of hungry wolves hunting for prey.
