Chapter 577 577: A Predator
Chapter 577 577: A Predator
Wade's spells study group sessions focused on enabling people to quickly master different spells in a short time, while Sirius and Lupin's training was about teaching people how to fight—
How to connect and coordinate different spells, maintain the rhythm of battle, aim accurately while changing positions quickly, predict, dodge, and counterattack effectively, and, when necessary, escape.
Harry, with his astonishing learning speed and adaptability, gradually found his own rhythm after a few failures, and his defense and counterattacks became smooth and natural.
As for Wade—there was no need to say more.
In the wardrobe space, he had repeatedly practiced dueling with his own magic dolls. Now, facing different opponents, he only needed a short amount of practice to showcase the results of his training.
When the last ray of sunlight disappeared beneath the horizon, Lupin called a halt to the training.
"That's it for today," Lupin said with a smile. "You both did wonderfully. Go back and get some good rest. Remember—waving a wand is only half of fighting; the other half is here." He tapped lightly on his temple.
"Spend ten minutes before bed each day to think carefully about: how would your opponent attack in different environments? How would you respond? How can you gain the advantage before the battle even begins?"
"The real battlefield doesn't give you a second chance, but in your mind, you can rehearse countless times. That way, when you actually face a fight, you'll know right away how to break through."
"Well said, Moony!"
Sirius patted his friend on the shoulder, then turned his gaze toward the two and said:
"I've seen plenty of people who always get 'Outstanding' on exams, but when they face Death Eaters, they're like trolls holding an extra stick—once their spell gets dodged, they just stand there not knowing what to do. You've got to keep your brain moving if you want to always stay one step ahead!"
"I get it—bring the battlefield into your head, right?" Harry grinned. "That's way more interesting than thinking about homework. I'll train every day!"
"Good lad! We'll all be watching the official matches through the Streaming Mirror, so don't you dare get knocked out in the first round!"
Sirius threw an arm around Harry's shoulder and started walking toward Hogsmeade.
Not wanting Sirius to put too much pressure on Harry, Lupin quickly added, "Even if you lose, it's fine. You're going up against the most talented young wizards in the world—just taking part is enough to be proud of!"
Just before stepping out of the forest, Wade used the Disillusionment Charm and reminded, "Harry, the Invisibility Cloak."
"Oh, right, I almost forgot." Harry hurriedly pulled the cloak from his bag and clumsily draped it over himself.
It wasn't a Hogsmeade weekend today, and they were all fairly well-known now. If they appeared in the village and were spotted, it would cause unnecessary trouble.
Back in the attic of Lupin's home, he watched the two of them return to the school one after the other through the Vanishing Cabinet before heading back to the living room.
The fire crackled warmly, driving away the chill of the night. Sirius popped open a bottle of Firewhisky with a "pop," poured them each a glass, then slumped into an armchair with his long legs sprawled casually over the footrest.
"I'm exhausted." He took a long swig, then sighed wearily. "Remus, those two kids are stronger than half the Aurors out there, yet they're still worried about not being good enough. Especially Wade… dueling with him is absolute murder."
Lupin seemed fine—after all, a werewolf's stamina was greater than that of a normal wizard.
Ever since the Wolfsbane Potion had been in full supply, along with proper nutrition, he no longer became unusually weak after each full moon transformation, and his abdominal muscles had even become clearly defined.
Lupin didn't respond to Sirius's comment, instead he rummaged through the pantry and asked, "How about bread slices and grilled sausages for dinner? I'm thinking of making another pot of potatoes."
Those two kids would be having a feast back at school, but the two long-suffering adults had to figure out how to fill their own stomachs.
"Don't bother with that—I don't believe for a second you're not tired," said Sirius.
"There's a Muggle town nearby with a restaurant. They make a great pork chop, and they're open until ten at night."
"Then we still have time."
Lupin obligingly set down the potatoes in his hands. Taking another look at their outfits—which wouldn't look too out of place even in the Muggle world—they tidied themselves up a bit and headed out straightaway.
For a wizard, a town fifty miles away was no different from a pub fifty meters away.
A few minutes later, they were seated in a warm, cozy restaurant, having placed their order, with a particularly gentle love song flowing in the background.
At this hour, the restaurant wasn't too crowded. They sat in a corner, surrounded by green plants and dividers, creating a world of their own without having to worry about anyone overhearing their conversation.
When the waiter brought their food, Sirius discreetly drew his wand and cast a Muffliato charm around them, then used a silver table knife to cut into the sizzling meat.
Once their hungry stomachs were finally satisfied, Sirius recalled the earlier training session and couldn't help but say, "Remus, don't you think…"
"…Hm?"
Seeing him trail off mid-sentence, Lupin gave him a curious glance.
Sirius rubbed his chin, struggling to put his feelings into words.
"Don't you think… Wade's training goal isn't just to learn from us, but more like he's using the two of us to gauge the level of an adult wizard?"
Lupin was surprised. "What makes you think that?"
"I can't explain it," Sirius said, popping a piece of roasted potato into his mouth and frowning. "It's just… sometimes I get that feeling."
Lupin thought for a moment, then smiled. "That's nothing strange. It's like a lion arriving in unfamiliar territory—it's always going to test which prey it can take down."
At that, Sirius suddenly chuckled and a sly glint flashed in his grey eyes.
"You know? That's a pretty interesting metaphor, Moony."
"Hmm?" Lupin looked puzzled.
"You've noticed it too, haven't you? That kid's not like an ordinary Ravenclaw. Deep down… he's like a beast… a predator," Sirius said thoughtfully.
Lupin's fork paused mid-air before he speared another piece of meat.
"Sirius, a falcon is a predator."
"Fair enough." Sirius let go of the odd feeling that had just flickered through his mind and said in a relaxed tone, "Only a month left—they both need more training."
Lupin nodded. "Harry needs to break his combat habits and practice more variety in spells; Wade is a little too rational—he should trust his instincts now and then."
"Dull students are hard to teach, but smart ones can be just as tricky. Just the two of us probably won't be enough to push Wade to his limit," Sirius said with a troubled look.
"How about two-on-one? I can set aside my adult dignity."
"Haha, great idea!"
The song in the restaurant came to an end, replaced by a warm, gentle piano piece. The slow, soothing rhythm carried a comforting sense of being embraced.
Sirius suddenly smiled silently.
"What is it?" Lupin asked.
"You know…" Sirius said softly, "if James and Lily knew their son was about to take part in the tournament between eleven wizarding schools, how do you think they'd react?"
Lupin's expression grew a little complicated—tinged with sadness, yet also with fond remembrance—before he too smiled.
"They'd be so proud, I'm sure. I can already imagine James bragging about it to us."
"Yeah… they definitely would," Sirius said.
