Chapter 348 The Bride of the Sea God (7)
The unfamiliar touch seemed to make Nolan very uncomfortable; it twisted its body, trying to get away from Yan Zhen's hand.
Yan Zhen pressed it down with one hand: "Don't move."
Nolan froze.
Yan Zhen moved her mobile game to its tail; the scales felt smooth and cool to the touch, better than she had imagined.
As her hand moved lower, Nolan's body stiffened more and more, and its muscles visibly tensed up.
When Yan Zhen touched the tip of its tail fin, Nolan seemed to lose all patience, suddenly twisted its body, and bit her on the tiger's mouth.
A sharp pain shot through him, and Yan Zhen frowned, enduring the pain without moving or shaking him off: "Nolan, let go."
Nolan held her hand still, his eyes fixed on her warily, a low growl emanating from his throat.
"obedient."
Nolan remained unmoved.
Yan Zhen raised his other hand and reached it over its head.
Nolan seemed to think she was going to attack it, so it arched its body slightly, the low growl in its throat immediately grew louder, and its eyes became even more ferocious.
Yan Zhen acted as if he hadn't seen anything, showing no fear whatsoever. He placed his hand on Nolan's head and gently rubbed its head as usual.
"Nolan, you can't! Biting is wrong."
Nolan was taken aback.
"Good boy, let go." Yan Zhen's hand touched his chin and gently scratched his jaw. "If you behave, I'll give you a sea urchin to eat later."
Nolan: "..."
Under Yan Zhen's gentle coaxing, it hesitantly loosened its teeth, turned around and quickly swam away into the distance, still looking wary.
Yan Zhen pulled his hand back and saw that the area between his thumb and forefinger was covered in blood, with several clear teeth marks.
She shook her hand, turned around, and went back inside to treat her wound.
When Wang Ma came out of the maid's room, she was startled to see Yan Zhen washing his wound under the kitchen tap and rushed over: "What happened?"
Yan Zhen smiled nonchalantly: "It's nothing."
Wang Ma immediately noticed something was wrong. Her face darkened, and after Yan Zhen finished washing up, she brought over the first-aid kit and treated her wounds while asking, "Which fish bit you?"
Before Yan Zhen could answer, she complained, "I told you it's not safe to keep such a big pet at home. Look, it bit you. You can't tame these things."
“I was the one who angered it first,” Yan Zhen explained. “It’s not that it can’t be tamed, it just can’t control its instincts. Mermaids can rival killer whales in fighting power in the sea, and their bite force can tear sharks apart. It only bit me lightly when I provoked it, which proves that it was subconsciously restraining itself. Otherwise, if it had gone all out, I would be dead by now.”
Wang Ma was stunned, her expression revealing a hint of lingering fear: "This is too scary. Wouldn't it be better to keep a kitten or puppy? Keeping such a big animal is really unsafe."
Yan Zhen smiled and said, "Have you forgotten what I'm studying? I'll be dealing with these animals a lot more often in the future. This is just a little preview. Don't worry, I know what I'm doing and I won't cause any deaths."
Wang Ma: "..."
After bandaging his wound, Yan Zhen took a net bag of sea urchins from the refrigerator, grabbed some kitchen scissors, returned to the poolside, sat cross-legged, and began to fulfill his promise by opening sea urchins for Nolan.
As she cut the sea urchin, Nolan swam to the other side of the pool, only peeking out with half his head above water, and quietly watched her.
After cutting up a sea urchin, Yan Zhen beckoned to it: "Nolan, come here."
Nolan didn't move, his gaze fixed on the scissors in Yan Zhen's hand.
Yan Zhen wasn't in a hurry. He placed the opened sea urchins by the pool and continued opening the next one.
It took her half an hour to open more than a dozen sea urchins and line them up in a long row by the pool.
While she did these things, Nolan remained on the other side of the pool, quietly watching her.
After cutting open the last sea urchin, Yan Zhen put down the scissors, looked at Nolan for a few seconds, and said softly, "I don't blame you, and I'm not angry, really."
"Come over and eat the sea urchin, then swim around for a while and we'll go back to the fish tank."
"If you don't eat it, I'll put it away."
Hearing this, Nolan hesitated before swimming over and stopping two meters in front of her, maintaining a safe distance from which he could turn around and swim away at any time.
Yan Zhen intended to scoop out the sea urchin meat with a spoon as usual, but as soon as she reached for the spoon next to the scissors, Nolan's submerged body immediately arched slightly, causing ripples to spread across the water.
It was still worried that it might seek revenge.
Yan Zhen paused, abandoned the spoon, took out the sea urchin meat with his hand, and fed it to Nolan's mouth.
Nolan watched her warily as he swam quickly to her, bit the sea urchin flesh, then swam two meters away before swallowing it.
Using this cautious approach, Nolan ate seven or eight sea urchins back and forth.
Perhaps seeing that Yan Zhen really didn't intend to punish it, it slowly relaxed its guard and swam away with the sea urchin meat in its mouth, gradually shortening the distance it had traveled.
After Nolan opened his mouth and ate the last sea urchin, he licked his lips and realized that he was standing in front of Yan Zhen.
Realizing that it had let its guard down around the human in front of it, its expression stiffened slightly.
Yan Zhen seemed to see through its thoughts and reached out to stroke its head: "Don't be afraid. Since I've taken you in, I will take responsibility for you and will never hurt you."
Nolan narrowed his eyes, the whole fish sank into the water, flicked its tail, and swam away.
Yan Zhen didn't mind its attitude and cleaned up the sea urchin shells by the pool.
As she turned to take out the trash, she saw Nolan's head emerge from the water in the reflection of the glass doors not far away, silently watching her from behind with an ambiguous look in his eyes.
-
The next day, Yan Zhen received a call from Si Lan, who asked her to meet up.
Si's parents, who were recuperating abroad, sent back gifts, including one for Yan Zhen. Si Lan asked her to pick it up.
The two arranged to meet at a restaurant for dinner.
As soon as Yan Zhen appeared, Si Lan noticed the wound on the web of her right hand.
"Nolan bit you?"
Yan Zhen didn't hide anything: "Yes."
Si Lan frowned: "How could that be? Its personality shouldn't be this irritable."
"It was my fault for being naughty and deliberately provoking it, which is why it bit me."
Si Lan raised an eyebrow upon hearing this: "So, isn't raising such a little creature quite stress-relieving?"
"Yes, it's nice to play with it during breaks from studying; it's pleasing to the eye and quite interesting."
“I knew you’d like it,” Si Lan said with a smile. “But the fact that it bites proves it’s not docile enough. I’ll have the professionals from the research institute who are in charge of training pet mermaids go over and teach it. You can talk to the staff about it, and they’ll tell you what to do.”
"Teach?" Yan Zhen asked curiously, "How do you teach?"
"It's like reenacting the process of you making it angry and it biting you. The staff will keep repeating this process. Whenever it gets angry and fights back, it will be punished. After a lot of repetitions, it will become a conditioned reflex, and if you tease it in the same way again, it won't dare to attack you."
