Chapter 19
Chapter 19
After settling Liu Qishan in, Nalan Jing quickly descended the mountain under the cover of night, his robes billowing as he did not disturb the creatures in the mountain in the slightest.
Liu Qishan watched her leave, the smile on his lips fading slightly, completely different from his gentle and obedient demeanor just now. He was cold and distant, like a bright moon in the boundless night sky, something that could be seen but not reached.
The mountain moon shines as bright as a candle, and the wind and frost stir the bamboo.
He sat motionless, slightly lost in thought, as if deep in meditation, and time seemed to pass slowly.
Suddenly, a whistle rang out in the mountains, and birds scattered. Only then did Liu Qishan come to his senses and move around. The firelight dispelled the surrounding desolation. He stood up and walked to the door.
On a spring night, the night breeze was cool and carried a chilly air, making people feel more awake.
A white sparrow circled a few times above Liu Qishan's head before finally landing on his pale fingertip. Its sharp beak gently pecked at his finger. Liu Qishan lowered his eyes and reached out to stroke its head.
It squinted as it enjoyed Liu Qishan's caress, then jumped up his arm and onto his shoulder, close to his ear.
Liu Qishan tilted his head slightly, listening to something. His lowered eyes concealed the strange look in them. His black hair brushed against his fair cheeks, causing his clothes to flutter and outlining his slender figure, giving him a frail and listless appearance.
After a long silence, he raised his hand again and tapped Bai Que's little head, his voice elegant and refined.
"I understand. Tell him I know what to do."
The white sparrow pecked at his earlobe, then fluttered its wings and flew into the night, disappearing without a trace.
Liu Qishan lowered his head slightly, his lifeless eyes staring at his palm, his pale fingertips curling slightly, complex emotions spreading out and disappearing into the moonlight.
He murmured a low sigh: "Don't blame me..."
……
Nalan Jingwen returned just before dawn. Liu Qishan had been sitting there all night, and her body was chilled. This was the scene she saw when she returned.
Liu Qishan seemed to have been sitting there all night, his whole body was a little stiff. Hearing the voice, he turned his head slightly, revealing a gentle look, and reached out his hand in her direction.
"You're back?"
Nalan Jingwen quickened her pace and walked up to him, taking his slightly cool hand in hers. The coolness made her uncomfortable, and she subconsciously frowned.
"Didn't you sleep last night?"
The willows are sad and the mountains are smiling.
"Well, I'll wait for you."
Upon hearing this, Nalan Jing felt the words of reproach stuck in her throat. Without making a sound, she tightened her grip on his hand, wanting to warm his hand with her own body heat, and brushed his messy black hair behind his ear.
"What are you waiting for me to do?"
Liu Qishan looked up, his expression calming down and becoming serious. Nalan Jingwen was puzzled by his change and was about to ask when he heard him say:
"You said you wanted to marry me, is that true?"
Those eyes, even without life, were still breathtakingly beautiful, dazzling like multicolored glass, making one afraid to look directly at them.
Nalan Jingwen stared into those eyes, pursing his lips and remaining silent, trying to find something on his face.
The hand in her palm squeezed her tighter.
Liu Qishan was nervous, so what he just said wasn't a joke, but a serious inquiry.
“Of course it’s true, I would never joke about this.”
She answered just as seriously, saying that she had made that decision after careful consideration, and that she would not treat a man's marriage as a joke.
"You really don't mind that I was dumped before, and you don't think I'm ashamed?"
Nalan Jingwen was slightly displeased, disliking that he spoke of himself in this way.
“I’ve said it before, I don’t care about this. It’s not your fault, it’s the fault of this era, it’s the fault of people being too harsh on men.”
Liu Qishan smiled, a smile so gentle and bright.
It has amazed time, softened the years, and touched the dawn and dusk; it has always been Liu Qishan.
Nalan Jingwen was somewhat lost in thought, but quickly regained his composure.
"You accept me?"
Liu Qishan raised her eyebrows and said, "I've taken care of you for so long, and my reputation is already ruined by you. No one else will want me, so I can only humble myself and marry you."
Nalan Jing was taken aback, then couldn't help but chuckle and rubbed his head.
After spending so much time together, how could she not know Liu Qishan's personality? He didn't care about his reputation or his innocence. His repeated mentions of being jilted were not because he cared, but because he was testing her, testing whether she disliked him as much as the world did. She believed that as long as she hesitated even slightly, Liu Qishan would give up on her without hesitation.
Although Liu Qishan is gentle and seems to be able to unconditionally tolerate everything, she has her own pride and unique thoughts. Once someone touches on them, it is irreversible.
"Are you truly not going to regret it?"
Nalan Jingwen pressed his head into his arms and stroked his soft hair, which was still not tangled or rough even in this desolate temple.
"I'm afraid you'll regret it."
She wanted to live a good life with him, to find a beautiful place to live in seclusion, and even if they were poor, she would be happy with it.
Nalan Jingwen's eyes darkened.
After all, just being alive is already extremely difficult...
She originally thought she would never have the idea of getting married in her life, but unfortunately, things are unpredictable.
In modern times, she has risen to a high position through her own abilities and no longer needs to obey her family or use marriage as a bargaining chip; she can freely choose her own marriage.
Many people, in an effort to curry favor with her, would send men to her bed to win her favor, thereby securing investment and building connections.
Unfortunately, she dislikes things that are too goal-oriented, whether it's people or events. Just thinking about them makes her feel nauseous, and she doesn't even bother to look at them.
Some even go so far as to try to get her pregnant through a one-night stand, using it as leverage.
But the era of using children to bind women is long gone. Moreover, she would never let people or things hold her back. That would be incredibly foolish!
What a bunch of idiots!
She has always been ruthless and heartless. Even if she becomes pregnant, an error that should not have come into this world, she will nip it in the bud. Nothing can threaten her.
She actually had a man who had been by her side for a long time. How long? About seven years. He had been with her since college, from his youthful days to his mature and steady demeanor.
He was like a little pet, very good at pleasing her, so he stayed with her for seven years. He was very smart, never overstepping boundaries, and never caring about things he shouldn't know. Even if he knew that she had more than one person, he didn't make a fuss. He just needed to be a pet that pleased his master.
She admired him and knew of his ambition. He hid his ambition very well, never revealing it for so many years, so she chose to ignore it.
But if he continues to be so obedient and hides his ambition, she can support him and ensure his wealth and honor.
But he was unwilling to be just a caged canary. If he wanted money or profit, he could have it all. But his biggest mistake was wanting a formal title.
She couldn't give him what he wanted, and he didn't deserve it. He was just a pet, yet he dared to dream of achieving great things in one step!
He probably overestimated his own status and even tried to run away from home in a fit of pique, just like others, hoping I would coax him.
However, his position could be replaced at any time; if it wasn't him, it would be someone else. Back then, she only allowed him to stay by her side for seven years because of his stunning looks and obedient nature.
But that doesn’t mean he’s irreplaceable. There are many beautiful people in the world; she just needs to spend a little more time finding one who suits her taste.
Some people think too highly of themselves.
He left, and she let him go, but he conspired with her brother to coerce her and try to sideline her, resorting to such despicable means.
As expected, greed knows no bounds; this act of using the guise of love is utterly disgusting.
