Chapter 375: Clichéd Trash
Chapter 375: Clichéd Trash
Susan Caldwell bit her lip. Just as she was about to speak, a group of people in police uniforms walked in. The man in the lead entered and announced loudly, "We’ve received a report that a drug trafficking ring is hiding nearby. You’re all suspects. All of you, come with me to the station for questioning."
The man in the lead was fat, his eyes so small they were practically slits, and his face was a mass of flesh. He wore a menacing expression, looking thoroughly imposing.
The moment Susan Caldwell saw them enter, her lips curved into a faint smile. ’They’ve arrived at the perfect time.’
An employee from the office stepped forward and said, "We’re all staff from the Jade Market. We’re definitely not involved in anything. You can rest assured on that, Chief Lewis."
The jade industry was the economic backbone of Trellis, and anyone who worked at the Jade Market was a local with connections. All of them knew this Chief Lewis.
Although they called him Chief Lewis, he wasn’t a real chief at all. He wasn’t even an official officer. He was just a local thug who had set up his own "police station" and appointed himself chief.
The uniforms they were wearing weren’t real police uniforms, either; they’d had someone make them.
Chief Lewis nodded slightly and pointed at Vera Xavier and the others. "Then what about them?"
Susan Caldwell breathed a sigh of relief. ’With them here, even if Vera doesn’t die today, she’ll at least be skinned alive.’
She shot Vera Xavier a smug look, her eyes brimming with mockery and glee.
The moment Vera saw that look, she understood. ’This whole thing was likely her arrangement, too.’
An icy glint appeared in Vera’s eyes. ’Susan has really learned from the master of cruelty, Rona Langdon.’
The office employee quickly pointed at Alistair Forrest and said, "They’re businessmen from Marinus. Their identities were checked at the border. They’re completely trustworthy."
He then pointed to Susan Caldwell’s group. "They’re from Veridia, here on vacation. We’ve verified their identities as well. No issues there."
Playing along, Susan Caldwell took her student ID out of her bag and handed it to Chief Lewis. "We’re students from Veridia. We’re all good, law-abiding citizens. We would absolutely never traffic drugs."
Chief Lewis nodded and glanced at Susan Caldwell, a fawning look in his eyes. Susan smiled faintly, then cut her eyes toward Vera, who was standing nearby. Chief Lewis immediately got the message.
The only person in the group who hadn’t proven her identity was now Vera Xavier. His beady eyes fixed on her coldly as he demanded, "They can all prove they’re clean, which means you must be the trafficker! You’re coming with me to the station!"
’This has to be the most ridiculous and laughable interrogation I’ve ever seen.’ With just a few sentences, everyone else was cleared, all through a ludicrous method of self-verification—they didn’t even have to show their IDs.
’And yet, with just a few sentences, I’ve been branded a drug trafficker!’
She was certain that if she let them take her to this so-called "police station," she would never get out again.
"Hold on." Vera calmly took her student ID and national ID from her bag and handed them to Chief Lewis. "Here is my proof. I’m also a law-abiding citizen."
Chief Lewis sneered, "From Crestfall, eh? They’re experts at making fakes over there. These documents are obviously fake! Seize her!"
